Let's plan this year’s campout. Last year we were in Hurkey Creek campground near Idyllwild in October. I think that worked out real well. Hurkey creek does not fill up in October and it is very nice with trees, grass and showers. You can get good pizza in Idyllwild. It is somewhat centrally located for San Diego and LA folks. But I'd like to hear some ideas. So tell me ---
1) What other campground you would like to use?
2) What weekend in October would work best for you?
3) Are you likely to come?
4) What else should we think about?

I had a good time, even if it was brief, so I'd do this again. It's pretty cool making music out among nature, especially in the woods. Maybe I'll bring a dulcimer along, too.
I don't know much about camping areas, but the only problem I had with Hurkey Creek was the time it took to get there. Since that's likely to be a problem with most camps, I'd vote for Hurkey Creek again. Heck, I might even bring my tent and stay over!
So far, October is open for me.

As long as I can leave on a Friday night and come back by sunday afternoon, I'm in wherever it is and assuming i have the weekend free...

October is good for me. I have never been to Hurkey Creek campground, but the website says roads are a little rough getting to the campground. I don't have a problem, but might be better to find a place with easier access, so more people can go.
Just a thought!

Russ I would never describe Hurkey Creek as a little rough to get to. It is paved highway all the way to the campsite.
If you want to suggest a different campsite please do. I think Steve314 said it is about a 2 hour drive from his house (Near Taylor) pulling a trailer. It is about an hour west of Temecula, so about 2 hours from Anahiem.

Hey Steve,
Maybe I had the wrong campgrounds, it showed a bunch of mountain bike trails etc..... I will revisit the website. Paved highway all the way, who could ask for more.... I will hold off on suggesting a campsite, as I haven't been camping in years. It is always nice to go somewhere new and a place where someone has been before. Let go now!!!!!!!!!! And in October.

Come on. Take a two week trip, do this campout and go to the Taylor factory. Don't forget to go to Yosemite, it is right next to Sequoia. That would be a fun trip.

I thought Hurkey Creek worked out pretty well. It's not around the corner, but it's not around the world, either. And Russ, getting there is an absolute breeze. No rough roads whatsoever.
I'll have to look at dates in October that will be good. My gig schedule should be ramping up by then, so that may impact my attendance...

I'm thinking Oct 10 -12 or Oct 24 -26. Any thoughts?
(Oct 17 - 19 is the 24 Hours of Adrenalin race. We can't get in that weekend.)

Man, neither do I. My '93 GMC Sonoma gave up the ghost two weeks ago. I'm currently driving my brother-in-law's 1984 Toyota pickup (and it runs like a top).
I should have my new truck by October (no, I'm not sure what I'm getting), so dragging the trailer shouldn't be a problem.
I don't do tents...

Ryan, it's very accessible. The roads leading to the campsite are paved, and the driveways in the camp are cleared and leveled dirt. Any car that runs well and has adequate power for climbing mountain highways can make it.

Oh man, that's no lie! I've driven through that area on numerous occasions, and I always start to get this feeling that I'm in a car commercial...

In the '70s my folks moved us from Bonita to Hemet. (Your apologies are accepted.) I guess they felt guilty because they bought me a Capri with a V6. I took guitar lessons in Idyllwild for about 3 months. I sure liked driving up there and back once a week. They had a Chart House up there that I used to like taking date to on the weekend. Then there is Lake Fillmore that has a nice jumping rock. Mt San Jacinto is about 10,500 feet high. I've been up it and Mt Tahquitz many times.

Hey, dico daddy, disco daddy...it makes no difference to me as long as I'm a daddy! (uh...in the non paternal sense of the word...)
Havent had the car out that direction yet, but I did take it up to my dad's vacation house in the high desert this weekend and found a long, flat stretch of unpatrolled road, where I tested the 0-60 and 0-100 get-up, and I had intended to check out how the 140mph speed governer worked but the road was a bit too bumpy for that...110 was as high as I got...one of these days...
Still a very fun car though...

So, I don't mean to distract all you sweet guys from your car manuevering dreams, but is there anything definite planned yet on this gathering? SteveS, are you the coordinator on this one?
Thanks. :)

I've been busy with something else, but I'd like to get this going again. Enough of the car talk. Let's talk camping.
Which weekend works best for you, Oct 10 -12 or Oct 17-19?
Should I do a poll now or wait a few weeks? The event that closed the park on the 17-19 was cancelled.
Here is a web page that has Hurkey Creek info.

Shoot... we in the Chicago area are working on putting together a little jam sometime in October - which will be great! But camping? And a Taylor factory tour? (And palm trees and mountains and blue sky and hiking and jamming... and... and...) Oh you guys are going to have way too much fun! At least post pics for the rest of us to check out after the fact, please.

DJanzen We will post some pics. You left out mountain biking and fishing too. Sometimes October is still very good for surfing, but we don't usually get to snow ski until November or December. Yes even though the California state government is the worst in the nation, I still like it here. Arnold might be the new Govenator.
Come on out, we’ll show you a good time. I have an extra tent and sleeping bag, there will be lots of guitars, food and good music. cpmusic might bring his dulcimer and play Stairway to Heaven on it.

Hey SteveS, thanks for the invitation... it's not the tent or sleeping bag that's holding me back... it's my workload. I'm hoping to get to the Chicago event, and sure I won't be travelling to SoCal. At some point, I will get down there and check things out - aside from the quick trip planned for Sept. 5 - 9th which is business. I'm sure your trip will be a blast... enjoy!

Thanks. :) I guess that's me. So we are definite on Oct 17-19. Are you comming? Camping is great there. You can get a B&B in Idyllwild if you don't camp or just come for Saturday.
marklyn -- It looks like the weekend of the 17th works for me. I haven't seen you since Cisco's gathering. I'm glad you can make it.
cpmusic -- So far, Oct 17-19 looks good for me. Are you working on "Stairway" on the dulcimer?
Anybody else OK with the date?
