Alright, it seems as though momentum is building for a trip to the Nantahala River for some whitewater paddling, flatwater paddling, hiking, biking, etc. (oh, and picking some Taylors too).
Please vote in the poll only if you're seriously interested in coming (and think there's at least a 60% chance you could make it). We've got to nail down a date and get a rough idea on how many folks might come. I'm figuring on arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday afternoon. The intent at this point is to stay some place similar to the Nantahala Village where there are different lodging options (at different price points), a restaurant, and a group meeting facility. We'll make this the "official" thread dealing with the trip, so from here on out, please post comments & the like here.
JR / moderators - any chance you could sticky this for a while? Thanks.

Hey Trey, I just noticed that the weekend of the 18th is when they are holding NAMM. FYI.
I voted for July 25th-27th.
So lets get the ball rolling folks ! This is a fun place, although it looked to me that most of the folks that showed interest had already been to the are and knew what they were getting into !
If you like the outdoors, live in the southeast, and I think we ALL love Taylor guitars, then don't miss out on this get together !

Bill, we're working on all of the above. I've got to get some kind of idea about how many folks are seriously interested in coming, and then I'll get us a spot. I'm hoping we can stay at the Nantahala Village - they've got cabins, houses, and a small lodge. They have a restaurant, some kid-oriented activities, and several meeting rooms (with power & such for a PA).
Spread the word about the trip & get people to post / vote to indicate their interest.

That last weekend in July would be best for me, but I can technically do any of those weekends. I just need to find a kayak to borrow. Anyone got one?

There's an airport near Andrews that can handle small & medium corporate jets. You'd be about 1/2 hour from the lower end of the river.
I'm thinking of a spot that has cabins & guest rooms available (while I'd love to camp, it gets tough with three little ones running about). There is camping really close by though, so you could do that if you prefer. As we contribute to the thread and when you post your name & email, let Dan and I know if you'd prefer to camp. Camping will certainly save a few bucks, and some of us probably just prefer it. Dan and I can recommend some good spots (as well as which ones not to go to) at a later date. The important thing right now is to figure out how many folks will need a cabin or guest room. If you're bringing anyone with you, try to let us know that too.
Thanks, and keep the posts coming.

I could camp or stay in a hotel/lodge. Because I would be flying in, I think I would rather be in a hotel.
Is this where we are going? http://www.noc.com/rafting_nantahala.htm

Trey,
One thing I wanted to ask you. . .
Is there camping where you're thinking of getting cabins ?
That would be cool !!
That way we could all stay in the same place, cabin or tent. . . Although for those more adventurous, I know where there's some free camping on the upper part of the river and have put a pic of the spot out on the web, see the link below. . . .
Also for those of you interested so far, I put up a pic I took down on the Upper portion of the Nantahala a few years ago. .. .
Its a REALLY pretty place, its the third pic down on my little webpage :

Check it out ! I'm gettin excited !!!!!

Steve,
Thats the "main" outdoor center for the river. ..
.. and as I'm sure you see Trey is referencing where we'll be setting up our "headquarters" for the excursion !
Now, I need to figure out a campground close to Nantahala Villiage. . . Trey ? Do you have any idea ?
Some more things I'll need to know (please add them to your name and Email addy posts or when you post your name and email addy list this info as well) :
* Number of folks in your party.
* Do you require a cabin.
* Will you be camping with the group (close to the cabins, "headquarters)
* Will you be camping on your own.
Thanks folks !!

Ok...now I'm really, really, really excited. :D I want to go rafting right now. Luckily, my church is doing a day rafting trip on June 14th, so I'll have something to tide me over. It will probably only be Class I-II stuff with perhaps one Class III if I'm really lucky. Come on July/August....get here already!
BTW...I'll most probably be coming by myself. I'll just bring my home with me (my truck) and sleep in that to keep my costs down. Money is important here.
I think we should do a scouting trip to make sure everything will go smoothly. How about a couple weeks before the actual event? I'll come! hahaha

Jennifer,
Take a look at the pic on my page I linked to earlier in this thread.
Thats a fine spot to spend the night !!! You just have to get there first !!! There are some other spots up around where I took that pic and its National Forest so you can sleep there without hassle !!!
FYI.

Some of the coolest trails around! Hmmm - boats, guitars, and now bikes. Hope there's room for the kids and wife to come.
There's whitewater, fishing, flatwater, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, a swimming pool, a playground, and picnic spots all right in the area. There are casinos, the Smokey Mountain Railroad, and "touristy" shopping areas within an hour. The area is also really popular with motorcyclists (on road). It is really pretty country.

I'm still thinking it is a go. I'm just sitting back a little to see if we get much more interest. I'm going to be in touch with the Nantahala Village this week to confirm lodging (for those who want it) as well as use of some meeting space to jam in. Dan's working on a list of potential attendees, so make sure he's got your name & email if your up for the trip.
Based on the pole, I'm leaning towards the first weekend in August at this point.

July 18-19 is the only possibility of the three for me. I'm not certain I can make that, so though I voted, don't plan around my schedule.
Actually, the Nantahala is close enough to where I am that I could drive up and back in one long day. I've done it several times. It's just that in my line of work, summer weekends off are both very rare and very, very precious.

Well folks, due to the somewhat limited interest in the trip and folks' increasingly complicated schedules, Dan and I have made the decision to hold off for this year. We will try to see about getting something together for the following spring or summer though.

Depending where and when, I'd like to try and make it. I've recently developed an interest in Kayaking. Haven't done it yet, but plan on it soon. Maybe by next summer. :)

I happened upon this post late 7-29 and I'm in for next year. Same place I hope. I haven't been down to Natahala for years but I love it. It's really a great place folks and they use to rent canoes at the outdoor center. I'm figuring they still do. I don't know about kayaks, probably the inflatables.
I hope it comes to pass.
