In the tune I'm working on one of the chords is G followed by what looks like a small circle, like a temperature degrees sign. My chord dictionaries don't have that symbol.

Does it mean G diminished (G dim) or something else?

I personally play it as Gdim

Basic fingering low E to high E: X1X023

Or up at the 6th fret: XX3141

Not one of my favorites for sure...

Yes...the little circle means diminished. If the little circle has a line through it then it means half diminished (aka minor 7, flat 5).

Yup. G diminished.
try XX2323

Cool thing about diminished chords, you can play an inversion every 3 frets without moving your fingering.
so go: xx2323 then xx5656 then xx8989 etc.
Sounds like Halloween, doesn't it?

They are all G diminished!

Folks, thanks for the info and the bonus answers too!

I like daleyfolk's fingering much more than what I posted! It's like a basic D chord moved over one string and add the pinky. No muss no fuss!

Just wait until you find one of those circles with a line through it;).
