Skype Guitar Lesson

I take lessons with Howard Emerson, and when I can't make it to his house, we Skype. It works out great (especially during a snow storm)! Skype lessons with Howard are just as good as face to face. He's also very generous with his time; if I feel I'm playing something wrong, I can Skype him and clear it up.

I think Howard's greatest strength as a teacher is his ability to explain; he always seems to find the right metaphor to help you understand what you should do.

I've served as a guinea pig for a couple of Skype lessons.

Online video instruction works fine for intermediate to advanced guitar students who are paired with experienced teachers. It's not the best medium for beginner instruction. The poor audio fidelity makes it a challenge to illustrate certain techniques for shaping tone. The varying video quality and camera angles can sometimes hide flaws in technique.

I think Skype is good for supplementary lessons but they shouldn't replace in-person instruction.

I've been giving lessons via Skype for some time now and they work out quite nicely.

There are times where the connection has been so good I've had people ask what kind of microphone I'm using, when it was only the built-in mic that comes with the Logitech Pro-9000, which also has Zeiss optics on it.

It's not an expensive item.

The most important thing to remember is the lighting. The better the lighting, the less your camera has to work. When they go into the low-light setting, they spend so much of their energy making the picture look good that the video goes into 'slow motion'.
