I hope a bunch of you get out there to see Doyle. I just saw him this past Friday (10-16-09) at the Skokie Theater in Skokie, IL. As usual, he was great, but the acoustics of this venue made him sound so much better than I have heard in the past.

He'll be in Lynchburg, VA, on 6 Nov, for a Taylor workshop at the Lynchburg Music Center... Tickets required (but free, I think).

If any of you go to see Doyle this Saturday, be sure to go up to him and say, "Russ Lowe from Chicago says Hi!" It's a running gag I have with him. Guaranteed to get a smile out of him if you do that.
Say that to Haley as well.
Report back here if you did it. :)

Is that a banjo behind him? Just to the right of his left leg?

Yup! It's a Deering "Vega" banjo. Doyle plays better banjo than he claims. ;)

I'm pretty sure AGFers norseman, WeddingGuy, & preston will be there, in addition to myself. So he might hear it a couple of times before the night it over. I'll definitely post a report after the show.

Good! He should get a kick out of that.
Ask him if he's had any good dinners at Cracker Barrel lately too. (Inside joke.) :D

Be sure to let him know you guys are members of the AGF as well. Doyle has a copy of the AGF Volume 1 CD that I produced for the forum and thinks all of the music on the CD is great! He knows that I'm a moderator here as well. :)

:D Well, I was thinking like by 6:30 or 7:00 on Saturday. The Hokies play Thursday night this week at ECU, so traffic to/from B'burg shouldn't be bad this weekend and accommodations should be available.

I can only say to those who were within driving distance of this show and couldn't be bothered to make it . . . YOU SCREWED UP !
Because you missed something very special. Those who have seen Doyle and Haley in person know what I'm talking about. One of the great talents of our time - you cannot watch and hear this man play and not be impressed and amazed.
Thanks to Cliff (Ragamuffin) for the effort to bring folks like this to our area, we're richer for it. ;)

Preston is exactly right... Doyle is one of the great talents of our time. If he ever comes remotely close to you, it will be well worth your time & money to go see him. And if he happens to bring Haley, well, oh my goodness are you in for a special, special treat! They are both amazingly talented and are also amazingly nice, humble people.
As we were setting up & doing the sound check before the concert Doyle asked if there was anything I especially wanted him to play. I told him I'd recently heard (and really liked) one particular song. He replied that it had been awhile since he'd played that, but he'd work on it later back stage and see if he remembered it. As it turned out, I got to spend about 30-40 minutes with him one-on-one backstage before the show. During this time he started playing the song I had asked about. He was playing it perfectly up to one point where he stopped and said, "You know what? I play this song in a different tuning..." So he had been playing a complicated arrangement of it perfectly in the wrong tuning! Amazing...
During this time before the show, he also shared a lot with me about his personal faith and some amazing things that have happened in his life in that area. Since this is not the place for religious discussions I won't go into detail. Let's just say the depth of this man's faith mirrors the depth of his talent. Again, amazing...
I’ve heard nothing but very positive feedback from the folks who came out last night. So like I said, if Doyle is coming anywhere near you, make the effort to go see him. You’ll be glad you did.

Did you get to tell anything special about Doyle during your introduction to the show? Did you say hi for me?

I kept my introductory remarks brief, knowing folks had come to hear Doyle play rather than listen to me talk. And, yes, I did mention his friends and fans here on the AGF (passing on regards from one in particular)! ;) He was very appreciative.
