UPDATE: The date for the get together is set for Sunday Oct 4th, at 2:00pm. It will be held at the Coffee Grounds, in Falcon Heights (close to the MN State Fair Grounds)

I was wondering how big the AGF group is in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area, and if there's an interest in a get together.

Last year Eric (Short Balding Guy) organized a get together at the Coffee Grounds in St. Paul.

I'd be interested, and will help organize it, if there is an interest. Assuming this isn't at someone's house, what are your ideas for a location and activities.

We could consider a jam, an open-mic, a workshop, a mini-concert, etc. As an example, if there's enough interest we might be able to get someone like Phil Heywood to play and give a workshop.

Keep me posted! I couldn't make the last one and wished I had! My email address is listed or you could PM me your information. I think some sort of open mic/jam session would be a blast.

I'm NOT the calibre of player this post is geared towards, being a real beginner, (no, really...a beginner!) but I'd love to come and say "hello" and listen in, sans guitar!

OK, we have 4 of us interested so far. How about we keep this one simple. I could check with the Coffee Grounds (located in Falcon Heights by the State Fair Grounds) to see if they will host this. They have 2 open mics per month; 1st and 3rd Sunday at 6pm. An option could be to meet there on October 4th around 2 or 3pm, and stay for the open mic.

Any other ideas? Are you up for this on 10/4?

I'm totally open to any times that would suit you guys and the date won't be any troubles either.

I'd look forward to saying hello.

Chuck I sent you a contact number should it be needed.

I might be interested in driving up for that. If you'd all consider letting an non-Taylor player join in. Keep me posted on dates, please!

Be good to see Eric again :)

I just received confirmation from Dave at the Coffee Grounds. They will host this AGF get-together. It will be on:

Sunday, October 4th, 2009. Starting at 2:00pm

As I mentioned in an earlier post, their Open-Mic starts at 6:00pm that day. So, anyone wanting to stick around after the AGF get-together could play at the Open-Mic (or just listen). Sign up for the Open-Mic is usually around 5:00 or 5:30.

The Coffee Grounds is located in Falcon Heights, near the State Fair. For info on the location (map, phone, etc) go to thecoffeegrounds.net

Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions. As the date nears, we should get a list of who plans to attend.

Hi guys,
I'll try to make it, I usually go to the 331 Club on the 1st, 3rd, & 5th Sundays of the month for an open jam hosted be Jen Markey but I'd like to meet you AGF members.
I'll be out at the State Fair listening to the flatpicking championship - wearing a gold U of M cap & t-shirt.

I should be able to make it!

Pretty close for me(I'm in Shoreview)....

Are we plugged in or just pure acoustic?

Jeremy:I'm no where near being an expert player-bring your guitar. We can do some 3 chord stuuff!

The Coffee Grounds is amplified for their open-mic. They have instrument and vocal mics, as well as a DI to plug into directly.

During the get-together we'll probably be just acoustic.

I'm in!!! Sounds like fun. I am bumping this up so I can see it tomorrow and write it down.

Jeremy... for sure bring your guitar. The only time I ever got any better is by playing with people who were better. I am sure you would go home with a bunch of new "licks" to try out. Really... it is the most fun and best way to learn.

I've been to their open-mic around 8 times or so. I haven't heard of any "acoustics only" rule, however I've don't believe I've seen anybody play electric there.

For the Get-Together we will need to be acoustic. The Coffee Grounds is hosting the Get-Together, but this is not a 'private' party; they will still be open to the public for their normal business. Staying acoustic will also be better for our attendees; we could break into groups if desired without disturbing each other too much.

You mentioned Taylor players; I think there will be quite a variety of guitars there. I don't think the AGF is biased towards Taylors. I don't have one either.

I'll stop by for a while. I'll bring my new 12 string based on a Larson model.

Hello Hans,
Great looking instrument. Very glad to hear you will attend and bring an example of your work.

To all,
I asked Hans (and a few other local luthiers) if they would be interested in attending the get-together. It seemed appropriate to ask, since many of the AGF members have a high level of interest in the instruments as well as the music.

I would be interested in attending too, and would bring along my Cargo. I'm sure most have seen one by now, but it is what I play...

Thanks,

I had previously contacted Peter to see if his Road Trip guitar would be available for our get-together; schedule didn't work out for that to happen. So, fortunately for us you will be bringing your Cornerstone GA. I'm interested in seeing/hearing it.

Sounds like a date!

Chuck a big thanks for organizing and your considerable effortsto make this happen. This should be a terrific opportunity to share the acoustic guitar experience.

I would enjoy seeing folks from all ability levels. Holy hannah, no skill level anxiety necessary. If I need to be humbled all I have to do is pull out my guitar at gymnastics practise (when the girls are going theu their conditioning routines) and their citiques put me back in the REAL zone. Acoustic muscians I have met in the Twin Cities and beyond have tended to be a humble, sharing group.

The Coffee Grounds Open Mic, hosted by Bill Hammond, welcomes all abilities. I played my first Open Mic under Bill's eye when I certainly was a novice. I had my "set list" of three songs and I proudly played 2 1 chord blues songs. My fancy song even involved fretting above the first 3 frets - big stuff for me. I was proud of the outcome. Bill and the other attendees were supportive and offered terrific advise on future Open Mics. Experts thru pationate novices benefit from this experience, IMO. He has flute, chelo, banjo, mado, guitars of all sorts, gazoo, washboard, violin instruments playing at some of the Open Mics I have attended.

I am anxious to see you folks and hear what you are playing recently and on what instrument.

All the Best, Eric -

We'll be in Ely celebrating our 10th anniversary. But, we'll be back on Sunday, so I'll check with the "QUEEN of everything" and we can probably make the run. I'm very familiar with the Coffee Grounds, so that's not a problem. And, we're all bringing guitars, right? SWEET! I'll let my kid know too.
