Giving this a real real early heads up, so that those journeying from afar can plan accordingly....

New Venue - the Seminole Hard Rock Café Hotel in Hollywood, Florida, which is just south of Fort Lauderdale. Should prove to be a significantly better venue than the Miami Beach convention center. The Seminole Hard Rock is a ginormous place, with a casino, a concert theatre venue, a dozen-plus restaurants, and all sorts of other amenities. And did I mention the FREE PARKING??!!!! :D

Be there, or lose your hair! ;)

If I'm still kickin', I'll be there for sure.

Can I keep my hair ?

The judges have granted an exemption; yes you may keep your hair.

I know enough to know that idle threats don't much phase you, Rick ;)

But the rest of you are still on notice :D

Since I live like 15 mins from the Hard Rock I think I might put together a little jam for any AGFers who care to. We have a room, and a pull-out couch avail. as well for anyone who wants/needs a crash pad for the event. I'll post the jam date once we get a bit closer to the April '10 date. Stay tuned. :guitar:

Hey Sharky,

Tim and I will be at the show. I'm not sure which night yet, but I plan to have an AGF 'McJam' at the Hard Rock convention center. If you'd like to bring your snacks there, we can save us a few dollars and it will omit your home from being completely invaded.

We'd love to have y'all join us for a 7:00 - 10:00 fun time.

Let me know what cha think. :)

Are you supplying the guitars for the jam?

Unless I'm working, I'm there!

I live in MA and when I heard about the first Newport Guitar Festival I was stoked, until I learned it was running at exactly the same time as the Newport Folk Festival. There was no way you could attend both events. By the time the folk festival ended, the guitar festival was also over. They could have scheduled the festival on a differant weekend, or at least schedule it in evening. They really missed the mark with scheduling. After a few years of poor attendance, they opted to move the Newport Folk Festival to Florida (but still call it Newport??) rather than adjust the schedule.

There are 2 major festivals in Newport, the Folk Festival and the Jazz Festival. These 2 events are 2 weeks apart. The Guitar festival could have been held on the weekend between the 2 music festivals, but no, let's move it to Florida.

Does it seem strange to anyone in Florida that this is still called "The Newport Guitar Festival"?

Doesn't matter to me as long as the event is here.

Yeah, it's odd. But evidently it's being produced by the same people that did the guitar shows up north, and in these days of internet based information, I can see why they kept the 'Newport' name. Otherwise, someone doing a web search for the event might miss the FL event entirely, were the name not used.

You are completely uninformed about the history of the Newport Guitar Festival, including why the festival was held, who ran it, it's success, who it was sold to, and why it was sold and then subsequently moved to Miami.

Your opinion/objections about the dates of the original event and retaining the name "Newport" are noted.

This is completely wrong, of course. The event was sold to the current owners, who made the decision to move the event to Miami for a number of reasons.

Perhaps you'd like to inform me about the history, rather than just telling me I'm wrong. My understanding is that the original shows in Newport were produced by Julius Borge, and sponsored by the Music Emporium. I suppose you're going to tell me I'm wrong about this as well. I first heard about the show from the Music Emporium. They were handing out flyers in their store promoting the festival.

People in Florida probably think the show is sponsored by Phillip Morris (Newport Cigarettes).

You are correct in that Julius conceived of and executed the Newport, RI events, in the off-years of the every-other-year LMI-Healdsburg Guitar Festival. The Newport event was therefore also held every other year.

The events were wildly successful, however, and therefore you are quite wrong in saying anything like "poor attendance" was the cause of anything.

Julius sold the event for personal reasons that do not relate to this discussion...but suffice it to say that the event was SO successful that it was taking too much time away from his building.

Moving the event was undertaken, not because of poor attendance (so you were mistaken again), but for the convenience and marketing ideas of the new owners, who happen to live in Miami.

Again, this also had nothing to do with a failure to "adjust the schedule" as you concluded.

The new owners simply felt that south Florida was a more natural destination for this event (which they wanted to see continue), and they wanted it held in *their* area. That's why they bought it, and that's why they moved it.

I hope this provides some clarity to the mis-information that was being presented here.

As to why the new owners continued with using the Newport name for the event, it is rather obvious that within the guitar-community there was a bit of a brand-name established by Julius' event, and the new owners wanted to build on that tradition/awareness. I suspect that eventually (perhaps not for another year or more) they will drop the "Newport", assuming that the event becomes established in this year's new digs. This is just a business/marketing assumption on my part, however...

...perhaps you're old enough to remember the Datsun to Nissan transition years, with the brand morphing from Datsun to "Nissan by Datsun", and then to just Nissan. I think this was a 2-3 year transition.

P.S. I am under no obligation to inform/educate anyone here, even if I take the time to point out an error. In addition, I'm as sick as a dog, have been since I went on-tour last week, and don't have the patience to hold anyone's hand. The internet is filled with mis-information from well-meaning people. I try not to be one of them.

Well, golly, Larry, I feel great and do like to help people without calling attention to my own stiff spirit. If you can't respond without such strident criticism of people trying to provide helpful information to those who ask, then don't post. Really, I doubt whether your illness has much to do with your attitude. I'll stand up and say it, your responses in this thread have been of poor taste and questionable character. Another balm for some sorts of illness is to go soak your head in the great fount of superior wisdom that is yours.

Of course.

I do now somewhat recall in my fuzzy memory that the show was sold prior to its moving south. My apologies for posting bad info, but there's nothing malicious in either my or drive-south's posts. We might be clueless, but we don't have an agenda.

The post count [and success] of the AGF would go way down were it not for the exchange of info between those that know, and those that post questions easily answered for themselves, should they seek out The Google and can sift the good info from the bad. And there's nothing wrong with that.

The internet is filled with mis-information from well-meaning people. I try not to be one of them.

Ah, then congratulations are in order... you have succeeded in not being well-meaning. I recommend getting the antibiotics, and taking them for at least 48 hours before posting further.

Perhaps the word "mistaken" or "mis-informed" would have worked a bit better than "wrong". As a former teacher I know that the use of words that strong (like "wrong" or "stupid") can have the undesired effect of making a listener feel inferior. Like the difference between saying "Constructive Critism", as opposed to saying "Constructive Comment". Big difference to the listener.

BTW- let's keep the AGF "Be Nice" rule in play here mates. I can see this going down the wrong path pretty quickly.

Thanks for the comments, Tad.

People are welcome to post whatever they want (mostly, it is a moderated forum, of course), and the misinformation on this thread needed to be addressed.

BB,

Google wouldn't have helped, and folks just like to post, even when they don't have correct information.

All the best,

Mary

I admit my information wasn't accurate, although I did Google the Newport Folk Festival for some historical info and didn't find much. I did feel as though I was being slapped around here needlessly.

It's all good. Larry, I hope your' feeling better!

I haven't ruled out a trip to Florida to attend this show. I haven't figured out how to pitch this to my wife yet.

How 'bout this?

Say, "Wife, Darhlin. How would you feel about a nice trip to relax and meet a few friendly folks. McKnight's are inviting us, personally, to stop by the McJam for a bottle of water one Saturday evening to meet some of my AGF friends."

(How much more appealing do I need to make it?)

The weather in April is pretty darn ideal in SoFL, an area that has more than its share of ideal weather. So that's definitely a selling point. Alternately, drive-south could say this:

Honey? You: Beach. Shop. Lunch trendy [or, not]. Relax.
Me: Guitars. Then we meet for a romantic seaside dinner or two.

Might just work :)

Awww, sounds nice. Maybe I need to skip the show and go straight to the beach. No, I'll do lunch. No, no. I can go shopping. No..wait. I'd be alone. (BORING...)

Guess I'll go to the show and enjoy the customers! ;)

Hey Mary,
I seem to recall an "interesting" story about a new golf bag for some ole geetar builder guy. Maybe he should bring that along and try it out in warmer climates ?

Then while he is on the links YOU can go shopping or to the beach guilt free !

Hey, Hey Rick S. Hail, hail, the gangs all here...

Who we missin'? ......................... STRAT!

Golf bag gender.... Great memory!

I have an idea. I'll get Sharky to show Tim the local course. While they are gone, I'll go raid Sharky's fridge. That's what he gets for living so close to the convention center. :D
