This is waaaay overdue, but better late than never, right? ;)

Maybe it's just my own song selection, but I've noticed that many of the best solo fingerstyle arrangements I've heard do not have accurate sheet music available online. So, why not transcribe them myself and learn a thing or two along the way?

Here is the first of (hopefully) many that I intend to share, assuming I am able to obtain permission from their respective artists. I always believe that a song should be learned "in context", which is why I include a short introduction for every transcription. This is still a work in progress, and any updates will be shown in the "revision date" on the first page.

A big "thank you" to Larry Pattis for allowing me to share this freely and for making a couple of corrections to the transcription. The album that this is taken off can be found here:

EDIT: Forgot to include the YouTube video collage

Thanks for transcribing this beautiful rendition and sharing it. Given I live in Oz, I suppose I must give learning this song a try!

I already did ;)

The real question is, why would you want to listen to that when we can listen to Larry's version here? :D

It would be cool if someone from the AGF were to learn this song with the help of the tab and then post a performance on YouTube ;)

Yes, it would! Regardless of whether that occurs, I'm sure there are a number of us plugging away at it. I'd be lucky to get the tune recognizable, never mind stylistically suave! I really appreciated your music notation key; that alone taught me a thing or two.

If YouTube still exists at the end of the next decade..... :-)

Your performance was beautiful.

Thank you for posting the music. This gives me my first DADGAD piece to work on. Should keep me busy for a LONG time!

I'm just the "messenger" ;)

Thanks, but I can't really take credit for it. There's a forum member who makes this available on his site along with an excellent TablEdit tutorial:

Work on those vibratos; they really add to the song :)

I rarely play in DADGAD, but this arrangement was too beautiful to resist. Maybe Larry will drop by and give us all some pointers about performing it :guitar:

Remember that this was essentially a protest song, and is about a guy who jumps in a river and drowns while trying to escape the local constables.

I think it's a bit of a sad story (read the unedited words!), and it's also (for me) reminiscent of my childhood, when we would learn folk songs from around the world in grammar school.

So I play it as a ballad, rather than as a jaunty, up-tempo bar song!

As Mak has said, it's all about pauses and working the notes with the left hand...as well as the right.

My thanks again to Mak, who is too humble in the work that he did to produce the Tab/notation, and with his own very-well-done playing of the piece.

Now, you didn't just retrofit that bit of information after reading the story in my tab, did you?

Not too sure about the former :p

I've learned so much from everyone on the forum. Think of this as just a very minor "thank you" :)

I'd better re-read your story!

...I got the "protest" thing from my friend Don Charles last November from his Folk-DJ-list posting...prior to his mention of this, I had not known that.

"I finished the show with the haunting tones of my buddy Larry playing a deeply moving instrumental version of one the best political songs ever penned.

Not that I'll ever be able to play this....
And why not? The dynamics require some work, and it's darn near impossible to play it like Larry does....but as far as the arrangement goes, I would say it's very accessible. Try it! :)

Mac, thanks again. I'll open this at home and see what you've given us here. I'll add it to my song list because it's a catchy tune.

Much appreciated,

Jeremy.

To all those worried about tryin and failing...I've had a crack at it today and it's great.

This arrangement is really very straightforward and very enjoyable.

Great tab, thanks!

Mak did a great job with the Transcription and I definitely think it's an accessible piece. As Mak mentioned, Larry's dynamics can be tricky to master, but we don't have to play it exactly like Larry to get enjoyment out of it - learn the notes and just see what flows out! :)

There are probably a number of AGFers who have already worked their way thru the tune, or are currently working on it. If anyone gets stuck, this thread is a good place to seek help.

This is so wonderful. How did I manage to get by for so long without hanging out here at AGF!

Thanks so much to mmmaak for posting this, and to Larry for creating this great arrangement in the first place. I heard this on YouTube a while back, and it is so great to have a transcription.

I feel the same way. This is a great place, especially for those of us (me) who may not have many guitar buddies in real life!

Lots of interesting tabs in the works now. If only I can get past my ADD!

Tell that to my attention span!

I'm currently high on transcribing stuff from the Poppin' Guitars album. Among these are:

Feed the Birds - Doug Smith (transcription done, need formatting and artist permission)
I Wan'na be Like You - Mike Dowling (still transcribing, this one's wild! :wild:)
Let's Get Together - Pat Donohue (next up)

Of course, at the same time there's Larry's (Pattis) other songs, some tunes from Huttlinger's Stevie Wonder album and some stuff I promised from Ed Gerhard's Sunnyland album. I need more hours in a day!!!
