Hello -

I am exclusively into learning open/altered tunings. For those of you who are into learning/playing these tunings I have a question if I may.

Is there any complete books/chord charts out there that exclusively show you all of the chords and shapes for all alternate tunings such as Open D, Open G, Dropped D, DADGAD, and all the rest etc? I have tried looking in music shops and online, but have not been too successful.

Thanks

I've played for a long time, but only recently started dabbling with alternate tunings. I have mixed emotions about it, to be honest. I definitely like the new horizons and different sounds, but I also find that I"m totally altering the already complex fretboard and creating problems identifying exactly where I am, note-wise. Sometimes, returning to standard tuning and being a little overwhelmed and disoriented. Maybe this is a good thing, on the flip side. Maybe it actually teaches you to better understand how notes relate to one another.

Hal Leonard has several books. One in particular is titled "Alternate Tunings for Guitar" It even comes with a CD to learn the songs they have transcribed.

I've written a simple program that color codes the root, 3rd, and 5th notes through the 14th fret, for any tuning you choose. From it you can see at a glance the possible major chord fingerings, and figure out others from that. If you're interested, check it out at

You'll need the Java runtime for your browser.

I too have been searching for good books on alternate tunings. The best I've found on DADGAD is Doug Young's _Understanding DADGAD_.

But what I really want is a book like that for Open G (DGDGBD)—something thorough, with chords, scales, and harmonies (sixths, etc.), something that will help with improvisation or at least composition.

Anybody know of anything? Books? DVDs?
