Hello All,

We've decided to host a guitargether on Saturday, March 28, along the lines of what we did last fall. Last time folks started arriving sometime around either one or two, and kept coming and going until the evening. I will post more specific arrival times later, but the thought is that it generally it will be an afternoon type affair with some light fare throughout the day.

The general location is the 800 block of West University Parkway, Baltimore, 21218. The offload is easy because there is a bus stop right in front of the house where you can offload with the emergency blinkers on. The car will need to be moved a bit down the street though, as that is a ticket zone. (The bus does not run on weekends, but the sign does say No Parking anytime).

I would appreciate on RSVP by PM on the boards. If you aren't signed up on this board and don't want to, you can email me at jim@baltimorerunning.com, but it might get lost with the bulkmail.

Regards,

Jim Adams

Hi ho Jim,

Is this for all skill levels?

I'm not exactly a newbie: 10 odd years screwing around with it all, but only recently stepped up to getting a teacher and practicing daily.

(What are these strange growths on my fingertips? Could they finally be... calluses?)

Anyway, I'd love to come, and perhaps eventually even host something like this.

I've got a good bit of sunny open land out in the county with plenty of room to park, play frisbee and some fine old fruit trees to sit under and pick away.

Well worn La Patrie Presentation
And either a new D-18 or DN3 come the arrival of that tax check next week (woo hoo!)

This is for all skill levels. Last time we just went around the circle, you could pass or play, sing or be quiet, and ask the others to join in or just listen...your call.

We had some "beginners" that broke out. Some stayed in the shadows, and we had some experienced singer/players who could do their thing with backup from others or solo.

So mark your calendar and come on down.

Dang! A good friend of mine is playing in Laurel the weekend prior. Driving up from down here 2 weekends in a row might raise the ire of my better half!;)

I WILL make one of these, soon!

Baltimore Area Guitogether Saturday March 28 - Coordination and RSVP's

OK, we are ready, (we think) to host a little get-together in a week on Saturday, March 28, in Baltimore, MD, at 847 West University Avenue, 21210.
Doors will officially open at 2:00 PM until everyone is ready to leave, though we expect to be able to start the clean up no later than 9:00 PM. If you are there a bit early, that is fine, you are welcome to come on in.

We will have something TBD on weather for munching on later in the day, as well as some finger food from the get-go. We should have enough food and drink, but if you want to bring a favorite wine or beer or dessert to share, feel free. But don't feel guilty if all you bring is a guitar, banjo, mandolin, or voice. Or even only a desire to hang out with some people who love music produced by those types of instruments.

Do bring a list of songs that you have an idea how to play or sing even if you don’t want to so that when someone asks you, “What have you got?” your mind doesn’t go totally blank. You can pass, but if you have something you want to try, you can go solo or let the others help.

Personally, I cannot keep time, remember chord progressions, play improve leads or sing on key, so I would expect that others will be willing to stomp their foot at appropriate moments, jump in with lyrics, or take a solo to save me from myself. They can probably do it for you too, if you are like me.
There will be a couple of extra guitars on hand for those who do not wish to bring an instrument, … some nice dreadnaughts for all to A/B and comment on. (Those will be a Martin CSN Tolman, a Gibson SJ 60, a Huss & Dalton DR-H, a Crafters of Tennessee Brazilian and a handmade special by Carlo Greco of the Guild glory days. Play away and critique away.)

One admin note of some importance to a few, there are two cats in the house. Karen is allergic to cats but has them anyway, so there is never much dander around. But if you have allergies to cats, just be aware ahead of time. They will be run off and hidden since they don't take much to strangers anyway.

Directions to 847 W University

The address is 847 West University Parkway in Baltimore,MD, 21210. Take 95 or 695 to I 83, take the Cold Spring Lane East exit got up the hill to the first light at Roland Avenue, turn right onto Roland, at the next light three blocks down veer to your left. 847 is about two hundred yards down on the right.

If coming from I-70, go all the way to the end, get on Security Boulevard, and make a right at the first light (Forest Park). Make a right at the next light (Windsor Mill). It will turn into Gywnns Falls Parkway. Follow two miles to Druid Lake Drive or whatever it is at Druid Hill Park and turn left. Follow around the lake (left turn towards I 83) then get in the left lane and follow I 83 about a mile north to Cold Spring Lane east and follow above directions.

From mid-town east of JHU take 33rd to Charles Street, right on Charles, left on University, when you get to Overhill look for parking, the house is on the left. If you get to Roland, make a U turn and come back down the street.

Look for an old bus stop / trolley stop on the left, the house is immediately across from that. The fire hydrant is right next to the sidewalk leading to the doorway. The front yard is covered in mulch, the two neighboring houses have grass.

City bus service does not run on weekends but there is still a No Parking anytime sign there So if need be you can park there with your emergency flashers on and bring your instruments and stand onto the porch, then find legitimate parking just down the way. A quarter mile down is another traffic signal, you can do a left turn onto Keswick then to University Pkway which is really a U-turn and come back up and find parking on the other side of the street a short walk away.

Oh, and I have been reminded to remind everyone to bring a guitar stand too.

My cell is 443 326 7959 if you get turned around.

Yeah, I have stuff in the morning (an annual event)... and a major fundraiser at my sons' school that evening/night. I had such a good time at the last one (and I only live about 15 min. away) that I want to be there for a short time at least. Jim and Karen are great hosts, and the assortment of music and musicians is awesome.

Ed

ps: that is a 50 year old "awesome"... as in, I don't use the term often and not like most 15 year olds. (grin) For me it equates to, "awe inducing".

Just making sure can't bring something. Thinking right now about a couple of guitars, a couple of guitar stands, a music stand, beverage, ....? Let me know. A little longer on accessories than skills, but ready to go and lookin forward to it.

Thanks to all to came. I personally had a blast. There were lefties, righties, drednaughts, parlors, corporate made and hand-built, and all sorts in between. Folk, rock, bluegrass, blues and jazz. Good players and not so good. Good singers and not so good. But no one complained about anyone else, and a good time was had by all... I hope. At least I did, and maybe as host, that's all that really counts!

I have some pics, and will try to post them soon. I think I have to upload them to a website first, then here. Check back soon.

Special thanks to you, your wife, and all the folks that came to play and share. It was really a special day. I only wish I could have stayed a little longer in the evening. What a nice place you have to do this sort of thing. In addition, you attracted an especially nice group interested in a pretty broad range of musical tastes. Your lead was great, there was some fine singing and playing and it was very cool that we could play songs I work on from the Fiddler's fakebook. How cool was it to have a banjo player and a highly skilled luthier with a beautiful expample of his work. I hope the group wants to play again, and I hope to see some of the same folks at Common Ground.

thanks,

jeff

Truly a good time. I'm trying to stick with the motto, "no apologies"... but, I've learned (*again*) that I really need to practice. And, y'all are pretty forgiving.

Thanks for letting me participate.

not to be argumentative, but I have never been that forgiving and Ed played and sang a couple of great tunes. In addition, the Taylor he was playing looked to be the one he had for sale and, while I didn't play it, it sounded really nice and looked good.

Kudos to Jim and Karen for hosting a wonderfull gathering. I really enjoyed myself - so much so I have the "dubious" distinction of being the the last to leave.:D Can't wait for the next one!

I usually hang out over on the UMGF but checked here to see if there were any comments on Saturday's event. I was able to attend for a couple of hours and will add my kudos to the above. Jim and Karen are great hosts and have a beautiful home, perfect for such a get-together. Had a terrific time and got to play some very nice instruments, most notably Jim's OOO-28 Norman Blake 12 fretter. That thing really barks! I truly enjoyed the variety of tunes and warm camaraderie.

Thanks again!
