Anyone w/in driving distance of Chicago, come on out Sun. & Labor Day to the Fox Valley Folk Festival in Island Park on the Fox River in downtown Geneva, IL (about 25 mi. NW of downtown Chicago). It was flooded out last year, but the park is high, dry and lovely now! Some of the mainstage stars will be the wonderful and wacky Lou & Peter Berryman; Steve Gillette (writer of "Darcy Farrow") & his wife, multinstrumentalist and fine singer Cindy Mangsen; multinstrumentalists/harmonists/clog dancers Leela and Ellie Grace; string wizard/songwriter/raconteur Joel Mabus; traditional trio Cooper, Nelson & Early; wonderful singer-songwriter Cosy Sheridan; Andrew Calhoun; Bovee & Heil, and many others.
On the workshop stages, you'll find me emceeing (and singing harmony) in the Sun. Chicago Songwriters Collective writers' round at noon; Monday, performing in that round at 11 am and with the Dulcimer Society of Northern IL at noon; and at 5 pm contributing to the concluding Songs of Love and Lust workshop. I'll also be working the CSC's booth on and off.
There will be jams, workshops (rounds and hands-on), a kids' tent, storytelling, dancing, open mics, and great vendors (food, clothing, jewelry, records, instruments, etc.). The dragonflies are eating the skeeters; few if any bees this year; and good weather is predicted.
Sugg. donation is $15 but nobody will be turned away. It's not a camping festival, but it's an easy commute (about an hour) from downtown Chicago or its west and NW suburbs and reasonable lodging options abound. The Geneva Metra rail station is less than a block from the west entrance to the park. You can bring tackle and go fishing in the river, or bike along the paths.
