Looking good, Paul!!!
This is something I hope to do when my children grow up and when I have more time to my own. But I will start with a build kit first.

If I am able to, I may want to attend the guitar building class by Kevin G.
That will mean I have to fly over thousand miles!!! :)

I will pretend to be your son and we can do the workshop together ;)

Wow, that guitar looks great so far. But instead of the guitar causing GAS, your home office is causing HOAS. :D I want that office in my house!

I want that office in my house!

That may be true - but you don't want to go through what I did to get it :)

Been working from home for 3.5 years and loving it!

It makes a good guitar shop for "clean" steps too!!!!

Thanks!

Sunday and Monday evenings we were able to spend a little more time on the guitar. Most of the time was spent practicing cutting rosettes and channels. We're getting better - but not quite ready to cut into the actual top. Maybe one more practice and I'll be brave enough to give it a try on my own.

Done since our last post:
• kerfing installed on both sides
• back of the guitar has been dish sanded to a 15' radius
• butt wedge (my favorite guitar term) was designed & glued up
• butt wedge installed
• crack-stop linings installed

Here's a couple shots from last night.

We hope to have some significant hours on the build over the coming 3-day weekend!!!

3-day Weekends Rock!

Kyle and I got to spend most of the day in the garage working on the guitar today. It is amazing how LONG things take when you are doing them for the first time.

I did another test rosette - and felt satisfied enough to do the real thing!!!

We also cut the channels in the kerfing for the back braces and glued the back on!

This is SO much fun!

Here's the photo updates:

We'll move on to bracing the top tomorrow - and then we have to wait for some wood to arrive before we can close the box. Maybe next weekend.

Thanks everyone - but when it takes you 8 hours to do two steps you have time to be clean - hahahahahaha

Stay tuned for more to come.

Great father & son project, great thread, great choice of natural wood accents, and what looks like it's going to be a great guitar...:guitar:

We've had some more time on the guitar lately and are quite happy with the progress. We've got the box closed after taking the braces down quite a bit - and are moving on to the purfling and binding.

Next up: The back binding

Take a look!

Kyle and I have had some more time on the guitar over the past couple weekends and have the body closed and bound on both sides now.

We're quite happy with the progress we're making - and are ready to move on to the bridge and neck - probably next weekend.

Enjoy!

Wow that looks nice...and like a lot of fun. I have some friends who built electrics from scratch but that doesn't take near the craftsmanship of what you're doing.

wow that looks very good. Must be fun making a guitar together. Continue the hard work. Anyone see a private guitar maker emerge from this :D

It looks really good and you're some photographer as well!

That is so tempting a thing to try, but I know I would mess up the finer points like the binding and especially the finishing. One thing I do regret is not trying out building when I was younger.

Hey, I know they sell Uke kits.....

I think building a guitar might be something I will look into for the summer.

Thanks Pkang - we have our dreams!!!

We'll see how this guitar turns out.

Who knows - someday they may make us be sponsors on AGF (LOL)

Who knows - someday they may make us be sponsors on AGF (LOL)Not until you start being paid for your work - but then, judging from what I see here, that may not be all that far into the distance.

We'd love to have you and Kyle as Sponsors! You can read about our Sponsorship Program at the top of our FAQ. (Thanks for the PM. It's been returned.)

looking forward to the finished product!

You and me both!!!

Kyle (my son) is in the process of purchasing the supplies for his (our) next guitar build (that would be #4). His is a much different design than mine - and I'm excited to work on it with him leading the way on this one.

We got most of the way through making the mold over the weekend - and hope to make the side bender (variation on the Cumpiano plan) sometime soon.

I'm already dreaming of my #5 - which will be the same body shape as #3 - but with a Florentine cutaway. I'm thinking of bloodwood binding and the Aramaic text from our tattoos on the 12th fret.

I'll try to post a mockup of my design idea in the near future.

Thanks to everyone for the great words of encouragement!
