Anyone here who has heard my song "Dad's Harmonica," or the work of Kate Early, the Bittersweet Christmas Band, Tommi Zender, Tricia Alexander, the Maxwell St. Klezmer Band, Small Potatoes, Jim Gary, Al Day and others has heard the extraordinary work of producer/engineer/keyboardist/educator Steve Yates.
Late this spring, Steve was pruning a tree behind his Morton Grove, IL studio and one of the limbs snapped back and knocked him off his ladder.....and stone unconscious for four days. He has suffered four broken ribs, broken leg, dislocated shoulder, spine fracture, skull fractures and a massive concussion and is still unable to return to the studio for the foreseeable future; needless to say not only has his family's income taken a huge hit but been socked with massive medical, surgical and physical therapy bills (little to no insurance, of course).
For ten bucks, you can catch a stellar lineup (I'm not officially in it because the organizers didn't realize I'd worked with him until after the lineup was set) or be part of the open stage afterward, as I will. Even the artists on the bill are contributing the suggested donation as well as their services. Details:
A BENEFIT FOR STEVE YATES
Monday, July 28, 7-midnight (open stage is from 11-midnight)
S.P.A.C.E. (adj. to Union Pizza), 1245 Chicago Ave. (cor. Dempster),
Evanston, IL.
(1.5 bl. e. of Dempster Ave. station on CTA Purple Line, 10 bl. s.w. of Davis Street METRA North Line commuter rail station).
Suggested donation $10. Lineup includes the above artists and more.
