My wife and I went to the Doobie Brothers and Chicago concert at the Verizon Center (amphitheater) on Sunday night...great show! The Doobies came out first and they were ON! They flat brought the house down! Lots of original Doobies (no Skunk Baxter) and they've still got it. GREAT show. Chicago came on next and, though they were good, they just didn't have the energy of the Doobies. Their music was spot on...perfect. But some of their vocals seemed off (to both my wife and me) and a couple of the band members didn't seem to be as much into it. The vocals could be because they have a lot of high stuff in their songs, and some of that capability goes away with age. They hit it right on with their older stuff, but, again...to me...some of their newer stuff seemed a bit off. However, the Chicago-philes that were there sure didn't seem to think that. They also put a drum solo in the middle of one of their songs, which I found irritating.

The Doobies came back out for a duel encore that was killer! Overall, a great, great show! REALLY glad we went.

One interesting tid bit...

We were seated about 20 rows back, close to center stage. A great location...$78 seats and we paid $Zip. We were on folding chairs and weren't shoved in with others the way a lot of the seating is there. We were also directly behind the VIP seats, which are boxes with a small table and four folding chairs. I have no idea what they cost, but they couldn't see any better than we could, so we were pretty well off.

Anyway, at the beginning of the Chicago show three young women (late 20s?), came down from the grass seating and climbed over the rail into one of the VIP boxes just to the right of us. No problem to us...no one else was in it and we didn't care. Then they started dancing to the songs. Again, no problem to us...they didn't block our view, though I think the people right behind them were starting to get a bit irritated.

Then they lit up and started smoking (cigarettes).

Verizon is a nonsmoking facility. My wife was up in a heartbeat...as were a number of other people nearby...and went straight to a security dude. Within seconds security was there and escorted them back to the grass seating. They argued with security like crazy (not a smart thing to do when you're already in an area you didn't pay for) and were getting ****ed close to getting thrown out. If they hadn't started smoking, we wouldn't have said a thing. However...

Again...fantastic show. The Doobies still have it!!!!

Next: Joe Cocker and Steve Miller. Really lookin' forward to it!

Glad you had a good time. I've never seen the Doobies live, but have seen Chicago live twice... but it was back when Terry Kath was still alive and all of the original members of the band were still playing together.

A great DVD to get if you are a Chicago fan is one where they went on tour with Earth Wind and Fire. It's called, "Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theater." They seemed on pitch on that DVD. :)

Always wanted to see the Doobies live, but never did.

I've seen the Doobies four times since 1972 and every time they smoked. They opened for Loggins and Messina the first time I saw them (Winter '72-'73) and blew them off the stage. Ticket was Jim Croce, Doobies, L&M. Zowie. Pick up their "Live at Wolf Trap" DVD for a treat.

Russ,
A couple of years ago Chicago & EW&F were touring and we were lucky
enough to catch the show at what used to be The Tweeter Center
(now named something else). It was a great show. I've been an EW&F
fan since the 70's. In fact they're coming to Chicago in July. Got some
very good seats.

I had a chance to see EW&F back in the 70's when they were pumping out the hits, but I didn't go. I've always regretted that. I also had a chance to see Elvis the year that he died... but didn't go either. I still regret that!

The Doobies chugged on the Geritol while the Chicago paradiddled on the Flomax. Yipee.

Forgive me. I'm an old putz too who just got back from a Dan Tyminsky concert in NYC tonight 6/24/08 and I'm a bit crocked. I saw Chicago once eons ago. But Doobies, oye. Give Beefheart or give me death. :D
