Joe mentioned on the thread on top woods that Uncle Bob had commented on the quality of woods we chose from. I was wondering if anyone had a feel on the bottom woods.

I've sort of assumed that the bottom woods on the tables were sort of the cream of the crop of available woods. For my 814c Redwood, I chose from the 800 level EI rosewood stack. In hindsight, I probably should have at least inquired about the increase in cost to upgrade to a 900 level rosewood. At this point though, I'm so very happy with my guitar, it's hard to imagine what I may have gained.

But I am curious if anyone else chose a guitar based upon the 800 level rosewood, and if they got the impression that it seemed to be a little better grade than what we might normally see in a Taylor 800 level guitar.

I chose a cocobolo set actually based on the recommendation of "Joe the wood matching guy" at Taylor. It makes a 2 piece back for an 810-LTD.

810-LTDs have 3 piece cocobolo backs, and Joe thought that aside from the sapwood (missing) that the set was "as good as" the master grade coco. So yes, I think I got better wood than I would have expected on a typical 810-LTD and without any upcharge!:)

Me, too, Mike. That's the one with the neck being remade because of the inlay error. Probably be another week (or month)!

The only glimpses I've had of it are on buddiesorg's "Glimpses" page:

and (the one on the right without the sapwood)

Waiting patiently! (really, I am!)

I believe that ALL the wood was better than you'd typically see. That doesn't mean that your wood will be nicer than every standard 800 that rolls off the line. But it will be at the top end. I know that Bob's employees pulled the nicest and the most unique wood out of the "standard grade" stacks. Much of that wood, Bob had personally set aside for a reason.
