A lot of people have been asking about my two TaylorStock guitars. I wanted to wait to post about them until I had talked with Taylor.
Unfortunately, they're both going back to Taylor for different reasons. The main reason the 514CE is going back is because I didn't want any pickguard covering up the flamey redwood top on the guitar. It was really late when we pulled the orders together, and when we talked about the pickguard, I indicated that I didn't want one for the reason mentioned above. Unfortunately, instead of circling "NONE" in the pickguard selection of the order sheet, there was nothing there. I always assumed that this meant that they wouldn't touch it. However, when nothing is indicated on the order form, that's apparently a signal for production to use the default. Thus, my guitar ended up with a big tortoiseshell pickguard covering up much of the treble side of the guitar. Additionally, however, there were some small bubbles in the finish on the binding of the guitar, creating some rough spots along the edge. No big deal. I can live with that, but I'm having them fix those along with the pickguard removal since it's going back.
The 854CE is another story. I'm not sure what happened with this guitar, but it arrived to me with some problems with the neck binding.
I want to be careful that this isn't interpreted as major QC problems on the part of Taylor. I don't think that it is. Certainly, one of the problems was the result of a miscommunication. I'm sure some of this is the result of my being extremely picky about something I spend this much money on. That's why I play Taylor guitars.
Taylor is going to address these problems and hopefully I'll be enjoying the guitars soon. I've only played the guitars once and both sounded very nice.
