Yippie! My 514ce arrived safe and sound today. Satinwood with a cedar top. Only had time to take a couple of pics. Nothing professional; I'll take more later. I'd rather play. :)

Go to:

Picturetrail (http://www.picturetrail.com)

On the left, visit album "trombone56". Hope this works ok.

(just checked -- you'll have to click on My Album to see the pics)

That is very pretty! I like the headstock inlay. I can't quite make out the soundhole rosette. Satinwood back is awesome in gloss. How does it sound?

HOLY SMOKES!! I love the back piece. Like everyone else I'm dying to hear your reports on the sound. I've only played one JKSM for about two minutes, so I don't really have a feel for satinwood.

Enquiring minds want to know!!

So far this is my take on the sound:

The JKSM has a sitka top and is very loud and bright. The cedar top on this has toned down the brightness a little bit, but the top strings are still pretty sparkly. I'm sure when the strings get older the sparkly will decline and then it will be more balanced. Decent bottom end, but no rhythm machine. Maybe it will get deeper when it opens up a bit. The closest comparasion would be a walnut -- only brighter. It has the pure toneness of walnut. I play a chord, the strings ring out in unison, sounding as one tone, until they all dissipate. No overtone warbling or one string fading faster than another. The sustain is quite long. I think it sounds good no matter which way it's played -- strumming or fingerstyle. On the strumming, with the tones blending so well, it's kind of like a solid wall of sound. I can make it play really loud without much effort and no breaking up. The Cindy is nice. Some of the pieces are a nice green and pink but I wasn't able to catch them with my old camera. The rosette is standard 500 series koa pieces. It looks really nice with the wood binding. Very earthy.
I'm pleased!
