Many of you know Doug Young http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/, many more have perused his pickup comparison page http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/pickuptest.htm

For the past year or so, Doug has been hosting a three guitarist
round robin show, most recently at the Mission City Coffee Company in
Santa Clara. http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/missioncity.htm

Mission City has become the new home of the South Bay Folks open mic
http://www.southbayfolks.org/openmike.html and a number of other
acoustic performances. The coffee shop has been renovated to include a
fine performance space with stage and house PA.

Anyway, the whole self serving point of this would be that I'm one of
the performers this coming Sunday. I'll be playing my slack key stuff
along with Doug and Ace Batacan, a local Chet Atkins style picker. If
you're in the neighborhood, please stop by and enjoy the show.

Me too!

I've only heard a small sample of your playing, Fran (listened to you play a few songs outside of the Healdsburg Festival in '05), but really enjoyed what I heard. I'd love to sit down with you one day and learn a few of those slack key licks. :)

I had the pleasure of playing a house concert with Ace (along with Mike Golay, Wade Thurman, and David Moore) during the same trip, and wish I could have heard more from him as well. Thankfully, I have his Coastin' CD, which features some beautiful playing.

I've heard Doug a couple of times (once at Healdsburg and once at a Celtic guitar gathering centered around a Baughman/Bullock concert in Baltimore) and love his playing, too. I was just listening to his [I]Laurel Mill CD yesterday, as a matter of fact.

Wish I could join you guys!

Jim, I'm sure you can pick up all the slack key licks you need without my tutoring. Just put that "kika" (guitar) in "taropatch" (open G) and slide those sixths up and down.

Alan, thanks a lot for making the drive last night. After I shoved my Martin in your hands I heard those Collings going off like cannons and realized that my guitar is a _wimp_. Anyway, it was great to see you again. I hope you'll be able to make the guitar party again next year.

Ditto!

Anything else happening in the near future? Didn't know this stuff was happening in my own backyard.

Btw, did I read correctly, that this happens the first weekend of every month? If so, I hope to make the next event in October.

You've got it, Doug hosts two pickers for a three-picker round robin the first weekend of each month. You can see the scoop at Doug's site:

http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/missioncity.htm

and you can probably email him and get on his email list.

Hi everyone, yes, I've been doing this every month, the 1st Sunday, 7PM, for almost 2 years, and at Mission City for about a year now. The event is a blatant copy of a gig Teja Gerken has been hosting in San Francisco for 5 or 6 years now, but I wanted a place that was closer to home! (of course if you're in the Bay Area, check that one out, too - last Wed of every month) It'd be great to see you, and if you are up for playing, talk to me about that, too. Next month, I'll be joined by Teja Gerken and Detlef Bunk, a german guitarist who will be touring the area. Dorian Michael is coming up later this year, as is Matt Mustapick (who besides building great guitars, plays them really well, too). Fran and Ace sounded great this past Sunday, and we had an even higher number than normal of people dragging in guitars in the audience, so there was a lot of playing going on after the show, until they kicked us out.

Thanks Doug, and thanks for the great songs and tabs on your site.

Wonderful music, I'll definitely try to catch the next gig. Do you play at these, or just the artists listed?

The benefit of being the host is that I get to play, too :-)

Fran, your OM-18GE was hardly of the wimp variety.......especially in your hands singin' that beautiful slack key you master so well......;)

The pleasure was all mine........and yes......I can't wait for the next party! :D
