Everyone in the Midwest (or within striking distance), we're getting close to FARM (Folk Alliance Region Midwest) Gathering 2007, held Sep. 28-30. If you've been to NAFA, NERFA, SWRFA or FARWest, you'll know we do things a little differently: we meet at a conference center, eat together, and though we have juried showcases (our third year doing them) we do NOT have "guerrilla" or hotel room private showcases. That's not what we're about: FARM is for networking, learning, socializing and jamming--and many attendees have gotten booked from just such informal opportunities. (And our attendees have consistently expressed a desire to use their sleeping rooms for sleeping). We have thirteen different panels and classes to attend, as well as two evenings of egalitarian open mics (whether you're Joe Blow or Joan Baez, you get one song, no questions asked, first come first served). It's a nice bucolic weekend away from the hassles of work and the city, with nothing but music and camaraderie.

But this year we've added some dimensions, all of them positive. First, though our grounds and atmosphere are bucolic and tranquil as ever, our retreat is within an easy drive or commuter train ride from Chicago (and a short cab ride from the Glenview Metra/Amtrak station and O'Hare) at the Techny Towers Retreat and Conference Center on Waukegan Rd. just n. of Willow Rd. at the junction of the near northwest Chicago suburbs of Northfield and Northbrook between the Edens Expressway and Tri-State Tollway. Though run by the Divine Word Ministries, the center routinely hosts retreats by other religions and totally secular corporate meetings as well. (There is an on-site chapel for those who wish to attend Mass, but by no means is it required).

Second, because of that, we've instituted a totally a la carte pricing structure for those who prefer to stay at home, with friends, or at nearby motels and avail themselves of area restaurants along Waukegan Rd. that run the gamut from fast food to upscale dining. (Of course, we still have on-site lodging and two buffets: one for omnivores and one for vegetarians). The conference center (except for single-occupancy rooms in the Maria House a block away) is entirely self-contained--lodging, dining, meetings, entertainment and jamming are all in one building, with parking right next door.

Third, we'd like to expand our demographic to those younger, older, and less affluent who nonetheless love acoustic music: so we have also instituted a special rate of $10 per night--which will get you in to see the showcases (Fri. night or Sat. aft.), Performing Lane open mics, and Sat. award ceremonies. Add $5 and you can jam or share your songs after the open mics. We're hoping you like what you hear, see and sing and will join us for the whole shebang in the future. There are further discounts for NAFA members, the young and seniors,

Our proximity to Chicago (first time in more than a decade) means attendance by many more area DJs, venue and festival operators, media, and bookers as well. And our proximity to O'Hare and Amtrak is attracting visitors and presenters from other regions. We are hoping to line up some local clubs to let us give some "taste of FARM" shows featuring showcase artists, staff and panelists.

So come on over to www.farmfolk.org, see what we're about, download and print an application and send it and applicable fees to our Registrar Joan Hellmann. But we're coming up on the 9/1 early bird discount deadline, so time's a-wastin'. (And if you are looking for a female roomie, let me know--so am I )!

Thanks for the Heads up, Sandy. I've got a highschool reunion that weekend (I ain't talking about how many !), but it'd be silly for me not to go the Gathering for a while; I'm so close by.

PS - Don't forget to tell us when you're "on" @ Fox Valley next weekend. I suspect they are still tweaking the schedule. I've got family commitments for that Sunday, but will try to get out there one of the other days.

Sadly, Fox Valley has been cancelled due to severe flooding (Island Park is submerged, and there are no available substitute venues that are both dry and large enough). More in a separate thread.

Breakfast (which I recommend only for early-rising masochists unless sleeping on-site) is 7-8 am, introductory remarks 8-9, and the panels run from 9-noon and 1:30-3. Showcases are 3-5pm. Dinner is 6-7pm. We should have the sched. up on www.farmfolk.org imminently---there are four tracks of panels per hour, so we have 12-13 panels from which to choose. You can drop in & out freely, just registering for the conference itself. You can get Sat, lunch & dinner for $25, or eat along Willow or Waukegan Rd. on your own dime.
Where is your reunion? Techny is on the SE edge of the NW suburbs--Lake-Cook Rd. can get you to 53 and points west quite easily.

Reunion is in Itasca. I flit around the metro area quite regularly. So, I'm not worried about the transport. Don't know if I'll be there @ 8:00 in the morning, or there till 5:00, but I'll be there.

Just found out that Sat.'s showcases start at 2:45--and that my singing partner Stephen Lee Rich (whom I'll be backing up on a tune or two) is on first! Odds are that one of the duets will be a Tom Dundee tune (hear that, Norm?).

We're still plugging in workshop/panel leaders into their respective rooms and time slots for Sat. and will post them soon. Note that all workshops end by 2:45.

Here are the showcase and performance schedules (and remember, the pubic can attend each night--and watch the open mic too--for $10/$15 if you want to jam after):

Friday night 7-9 pm--Performing Lane open mic (1 song/artist; emcees: various board members incl. you-know-who)
Showcases 9-11 pm: (20 min. sets) Emcee: Rich Warren (DJ of WFMT's and XM Radio's Midnight Special and Folkstage)
Thea Hopkins, John Wort Hannam, Joe Jencks, Lisa Biales, Chico Schwall, D-Squared
Jamming & song circles 11 pm till whenever

Sat. showcases: 2:45-4:45 p.m (20 min. sets) Emcee: Phil Cooper
Stephen Lee Rich, Marita Brake, Randall Williams (who will also teach a multiple-capo workshop earlier in the day), Jeremy
Kittel, Venetia Sekema, Tammerlin
Dinner break 4:45-7 pm
Awards presentations 7-7:30 pm
Performing Lane open mic (same rules, same usual suspects emceeing) 7:30-11 pm
Jamming & song circles 11 pm till voices give out, players keel over and some suburban wet blanket calls the cops

I doubt I will take a solo Performing Lane slot unless Susan does (as I doubt she will)--since SASS! was born we have customarily taken only one slot, as SASS!, and last year as the SASS! Trio. Kate Early will join us in the SASS! Trio (and this year will be her turn to sing lead) as well as part of Cooper, Nelson & Early. Also note that showcase artists will NOT be performing in the open mic, so that there is room for everyone who wants and applies for a one-song slot (get those apps in now, folks--we will allow walk-in registrations but cannot guarantee walk-ins an open mic slot).

Sun. morning--after breakfast and general membership meeting, Spirit Song Circle (facilitator: Susan Urban) 11 am till everyone has had a turn to play, pass or request a tune from any spiritual or religious tradition. Singing and playing along encouraged unless the one offering the song requests otherwise.

There will be no workshops during the showcases and open mics.

Though I was not on the Showcase Committee (and am not even sure who was, so I could not lobby and did not know who applied till they were chosen), I have seen and heard all of the showcase artists in action (at other conferences, in clubs or at festivals, and in one case sitting in), and can tell you they are all AWESOME. They are also NOT all from the Midwest--anyone is eligible to apply (we have had showcasers from New England, the Mid-Atlantic, Texas, Canada and the Pacific Northwest). If you feel you've got what it takes, I encourage you to do so for 2008 as soon as we announce the start of the submission period. If chosen, you'd have to get here on your own dime, however.
