I know there are not alot of Keith Urban fans around here, but he can really play the guitar. Saw a concert this past weekend and he was playing a small body acoustic that was just unbelievable; however, I was unable to tell what make it was. Anybody happen to know what it might be? Thanks.

Absolutely that guy can play... like crazy!! He is awsome w/ a strat too!
I saw him about a month ago and he was using the little Martin, The one in the second video. He plays a bunch of different guitars but he plays so many leads and solo's while singing no less, he is an awsome entertainer!

It wasn't a Martin for sure - that would have been easy to spot, and it was much smaller than a 000-18. It looked like a palor guitar, but the sound that came out of it was nothing short of amazing. It was the only acoustic he played all night at one of the best concert I have ever seen.

which one did you to? I saw him in Fresno at the Save Mart Center, he played the Martin there a couple times..

He probably has so many different choices, who knows. have you looked on you tube to try & find it?

I saw him at the Philadelphia Wachovia Center this past Saturday and he brought the house down. He played for 2 1/2 hours straight. The name on the headstock was in script and impossible to make out but it did have a Fishman looking barndoor blender on the top. I'll look on youtube. Thanks.

There was another thread a few months ago regarding Keith Urban, and I was blown away when I saw him on You Tube ... It was some of the fastest changing chords I have ever seen... I just started appreciating some of this music, and he does an excellent job..

I heard the Concert was great at Wachovia !

he has a maton jumbo he uses and a martin 000-18..ive also seen him using a collings d-1 in some youtube videos...thats pretty much what he uses acoustic..tho i have seen him use a gibson on a live awards show with brooks and dunn....electric his strat is a eric clapton model and he has a fender tele i think its a pretty rare run bc it has the flame, and it has the nashville style 3 pickups..tho he only has the back pickup in there anymore..and he uses a gibson

The guitar that you are talking about that Keith Urban plays is a CJ-85 "Custom Jumbo" it has Maton written script along the headstock which is custom order it is normally written across the headstock. It is Blackwood B/S and spruce top with an AP5 pickup system and a keyhole headstock.

This is the one he was using, the mini maton. Doesn't sound so good in this video, but let me tell you live, wow! It just blew me away. Great little guitar. Either that, or he has some incredible sound reinforcement.

Also see the link below.

I would like to hear how it sounds unplugged.

Yea, I know what you mean. Could be a $2,000 guitar going through $10,000 worth of sound reinforcement before it hits the house.

Yes, Keith uses a Mini Maton for his live show. I own Matons and saw his endorsment on the Maton website. The sound he gets out of it is nothing short of amazing, Sounds much much larger than it is. It uses Maton's Ap4 and Ap5 pickup (depending on model), which is, by far, the best made.

As soon as I saw the thread I thought it would be a mini maton...

And they are absolutely amazing guitars, If I was doing more live gigs, I'd definitely buy one, they're an absolute hoot to play...the short scale means they play easier than most electrics and the plugged in sound is nothing short of phenomenal...then because of the small body you can overdrive them too.

I like the Diesel model with the 12 strings, Spruce top, Blackwood back and sides and the AP5 pickup...

I love Matons...a lot...

It was probably the mini-maton, not a Martin. It is the guitar he has been touring with.

The mini Matons are a very strange and enticing guitar. I have only held one for a few minutes - in a store - and played for just a few strums and arpeggios but what a unique instrument! I highly recommend you try to find one out and give it a try.
It IS very very small - in the order of a parlor guitar, but it could also double as a 3/4 guitar so it would really be a perfect guitar to have your young children start out with. The build and electronics are made for studio and stage work, and as far as tone is concerned, it just passes the grade, but I think it really was designed to be played through the circuitry. Most noticeable though was the feel - this thing is like a little tank! Very solid and heavy despite its size; I suspect it was built for abuse - this guitar can take the knocks and hits of tour life and studio kick-rounds and still sing the songs.

So bottom line: a unique niche guitar: very small, solid and heavy, designed for mic'd or plugged in performances and probably will give Takamine a run for "best stage guitar" kudos. The EMD/6 also has a 12 string sister EMD/12.
