Susan & I are headed up to the Hiawatha Festival of Traditional Music & Dance (aka Hiawatha Folk Festival) in Tourist Park on the outskirts of Marquette, MI. If you think it's just trad, the headliners are Ellis Paul, Cheryl Wheeler and punk fusion-klezmer band Yid Vicious (i LOVE that name!). The headliners will be mixing it up with us on the workshop stages (in the past, we got to play and harmonize with Jonathan Edwards, Maura O'Connell and Garnet Rogers), and there is a main stage open mic Sat. & Sun. mornings after the first workshops.

The fest opens for registration, camping and jamming tomorrow (Fri) July 20; we may hang around the campfires tomorrow night. We've been assigned individually to workshop stages, but will perform together as SASS! Look for us both Sat. & Sun. mornings in the Songwriting and Percussion workshops; and on Sun. aft. we're going to be part of the house band for "Stump the Band," a la the old Tonight Show audience participation game. It'll be a great way to hone my jamming and improvisational skills, so feel free to throw us for a loop. The jams break out around the campfires and tailgates all three nights.

There are food and crafts vendors, and Dead River Coffee Roasters will have a full-service mobile espresso bar on site!

Turning in after a long campfire song circle--heading home in the morning. But I can die happy: Cheryl Wheeler told me she woke up this morning singing "Dead Animals and Leaves" after our Stump-the-Band workshop together yesterday!
