Hi, everyone! I promised earlier in the week that I would spill the details of the open mic I'm co-hosting again this Sat. night (Live Earth Madison, redux--but this time we get to use the PA) and the SASS! Trio's appearance(s) at this Sunday's Woodstock Folk Festival. Details:

Sat. July 14, 8 pm--Andina & Rich co-host the open mic at ESCAPE JAVA JOINT, 912 Williamson St., Madison, WI. Come for the music, stay for the coffee and the art (it's a gallery too and has several comfy rooms for schmoozing and wi-fi surfing). We'll be taping for our concert video--so if you want to be immortalized even without performing, all you have to do is show up and be in the audience! Free! Std. open mic rules apply: 3 songs or 15 min., whichever ends first; no full drum kits; keep your clothes on. Covers and originals both perfectly ok. No instrument too weird--last week we had someone pay tribute to Boots Randolph with "Yakkety Pennywhistle," with "Louie Louie" and a Ray Charles medley as encores. Plenty of free parking in the lot 2 doors down.

Sun. July 15, 1-1:30 pm--the SASS! Trio kick off the WOODSTOCK FOLK FESTIVAL's air-conditioned *indoor* stage at the STAGE LEFT CAFE right in the center of town on the town square, as the Featured Artists before the open mic. And from 5-6 pm, we'll be joining all the acts on the outdoor main stage (in the middle of the square) for the group singalong finale. We're hoping you'll be there singing along (and maybe hitting that open mic in between). Sugg. donations: $10 indiv/$20 family/$7 students & seniors.
Wondering who's headlining? Well, among others, JIM POST (remember the 1968 duo Friend & Lover? Jim may prefer you don't because he's come a LONG way since then;) ), AMY SPEACE (E. Coast alt-folk/acoustic rocker) and LEE MURDOCK (with his 12-string guitar and a lifetime's worth of collected songs about the Great Lakes, including his own classic, "The Christmas Ship"). Hope to see you there!

So what time is the open mic in Woodstock ? Right after you gals ?

I may try to make one or the other. I've done a couple of the open mics with Norm and Nancy @ Bill's Blues lately.

Open mic at Woodstock is immediately following our set. Love to have you come down and play!

Ahhhh. I'm informed I have a family obligation on Sunday. There's a slight chance I can swing up to Madison this evening.

Knock them dead.

So, how was the weekend, Sandy? I'm sad I couldn't make it out to Woodstock.

One of these days I'm going to see your ensemble.

We had a great time and turnout for both shows. AGF member Don Blenley (didn't catch his AGF handle, because the room was noisy when he introduced himself to me) came all the way in from Racine and played the Madison open mic; and the SASS! Trio did a dynamite Featured Artist set before the open mic at Woodstock. Too bad Rich Warren mentioned and played ONLY the main stage artists on the Midnight Special Sat. night--we'll see if he mentions and plays us when we do Ravenswood Manor in Aug. or just the national touring artist with which we're co-billing. We would have had a larger crowd had the Featured Artist set been placed in the middle of the open mic. And on the main stage, during the finale, we got to lead the performers and audience on "City of New Orleans" (Katie sang lead, I played lead guitar and sang high harmony, Susan played 6-string banjo, tuned like a guitar). What was neat was that for the rest of the finale, they put me upfront on mic because I knew all the chords, and even got a short solo on "I'll Fly Away." Hopefully, we'll get a regular main stage slot next year.

The festival open mic filled up pretty quickly, so much so that the slots were cut from 15 to 10 minutes.

The name is actually Dan Blimling but that was not bad considering the noise and the fact that I was 11 before I could do the last name myself. It was great to meet Sandy and Rich in person and I really enjoyed the short closing set. I am also having fun with the CDs.

I am so unhappy that, due to circumstances WITHIN my control, I could not attend either event. Of course, as Marshall said, he has been at open mikes at Bill Blues Bar with me and Nancy, and I have a very DEFINITE commitment to those Sundays, so Woodstock was out for me this year, both transport and time wise. Oh well, as a Cub fan I am used to saying "Wait till next year!" As for Madison, let me know the next time it goes on! I should be mobile by then!!!!:guitar:
