Well, looks like a good time was had by all. Scott Pearson is a friend of mine too Folkstrum, so I was rooting for him as well. I talked to Scott less than a week ago, and he intended to come to the Wayne Henderson contest. But, his wife is due with their 4th child this next week, and he was a little afraid of rambling too far from home. That man has to get his priorities straight, lol. Btw, Scott's wife is a fine fiddler and has won the contest at Winfield in the past.
But Matt is my buddy, sure would have liked to have seen him win this one. Besides that, if I come up there next year I'll have him to contend with.:D
I think the third judge in the middle is Jon Garon of My Favorite Guitars. And I told you Jack's guitar was a beast.;)

Nah--wasn't Jon--I met up with him too-he has kind of furrier, more-"poofy" gray hair, is considerably shorter than the fella in the middle, and was doing a workshop when the original judging went on-so it isn't him, and I'll be dipped if I know who it is! Sorry. I also didn't mean to imply Scott wasn't a pal too--just Matt was kinda down a bit-Scott? Well, when you can tell me what planet these people all come from....

Great pics! Am I correct in remembering that "John" McEuen was known as Rod McEuen way back in the 60's? I remember listening to his poetry with a friend of mine who was a big fan.
The more I think about it, could it be that John and Rod are brothers?

Ummmm-NO WAY! John founded the "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band"--biggest hit? "Mr. Bojangles." He is a true bluegrasser/guitar phenomenon. Also, put together the historic double album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." He is amazing; I attended his workshop; gave out banjo techniques and guitar as well. NO relation to "El Rod-o". This man, and now his sons with him, will blow your socks off! He doesn't do "poetry"--he plays the hell out of banjos and guitars, and reprises things like Maybelle Carter's "Keep on the Sunnyside" and "Will the Circle...". An AMAZING treasure! You got the wrong McEuen (and I think Rod is McKuen).

Thanks for the clarification. At my age, things tend to get jumbled around in the cranial cavity since there is not as much grey matter there as there used to be. I surely do remember the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Mr. Bojangles. Now-even with limited memory-I'm pretty sure this song was written by a fellow Texan/Jerry Jeff Walker.;)

Hey--correct! I had to keep referring to the "printed program" to keep all the names straight! And you're right--Jerry Jeff; John McEuen offered a workshop I went to on "Banjo and Guitar 'Tricks'"--he spent a good 15 minutes talking about the album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"-and how awed he was at his younger age playing with Earl, Merle, Maybelle Carter, Doc, etc. He also gave us the history of "Mr. Bojangles" which put the Nitty Gritty on the map. Spoke highly of Jerry Jeff, who was pretty young when he wrote the tune-and went on to record it himself. Thanks for looking at the pix.

Thank you for posting these pics. I would love to go to something like this and just get lost in the music for an entire day. I think it was way cool that all the entertainers were acessible and glad to pose for pictures. I wonder how many of these great players were picking on Estebans?:D

Hah! Good one, Kilgore! None. Luckily I donated the guitar several days earlier to Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Camp--but I "lost" the "sticky privilege" :(.I was "lost" in it two days; backstage, had unbridled access to ALL the players--even swapped a Kyser Capo with "Mama Doerful" (I had a pink one-only one left-yecch!) with her black one. She was THRILLED to have a "pink" Kyser, and I took a fair amount of grief for capoing my Omega with a pink one during the "All Gospel/Bluegrass Worship Service" at 11:00. So--she got what she loved, and I got me a "REAL MAN'S" Capo!
Great Father's Day!

Well, that part has been covered, I remember when I was maybe 14 or so and at Disneyworld I saw Rod giving a poetry reading. I always get him and Richard Harris mixed up.
John McEuen is a cowriter with Michael Martin Murphey of one of my favorite songs, Carolina In The Pines. My eldest daughter, Carolina, was named after that song and I had the pleasure of having Michael play that in person and dedicate it to her in a packed hall for her birthday. Was pretty cool to hear the screams of delight coming from the balcony box seats my daughter and her friends occupied while I was backstage and my first wife was singing backup. Pretty cool memory for me.

John is just your "typical" California folkie/pop bluegrass guy. Very much more laid-back than others I've crossed paths with. His workshop was half discourse (which was really neat) and then playing a few things on his banjo and guitar. He isn't cut out to be an instructor as he assumes we can all pretty play much like he does (HAH! I wish!). But I DID pick up an easy and useful "trick" on the bridge placement on my Deering Sierra. Basically, I didn't care if he recited the alphabet. Being in a pavillion with like 50 people and John McEuen was just dang cool! The pic I took of him was fine, and he was very gracious about "posing" for a sycophant/fan. Also, his set with his sons was terrific, with the encore of "Mr. Bojangles." At the workshop, he told us the whole story of the song, the writer (Jerry Jeff Walker) and how it put the "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" on the pop-chart map. Very, very interesting (well to me at least ).

Sorry-need a "bump" (and it may not be the last) so that Jon Garon of MFG can take a peek at something. Long story. "Pistolero" can explain, but he fled the county! That's COUNTY! Thanks. Don't get annoyed--it really is to do something "nice".

Sorry to post to my own post, but editing it would probably keep it buried. Not that that's horrible. I wanted to briefly explain I had pointed a mutual acquaintance to the thread, specifically to attempt to get the shots I took of Ryan Holladay with his Dad, AND Clay Hess with his Dad on "Father's Day" to them. Neither had an email I could find--the one for Ryan's Dad, Mark--was a "DAEMON" thing. So...that was it. Both pix were successfully sent, in addition to one Matt Lindsey (Pistolero's friend) asked me for with him and Jack Lawrence. That was all. Sorry to re-intrude. I'll go away now.
